Test Proctoring

What is Test Proctoring?

A proctor is the person who supervises the exam room to ensure that everyone follows the rules, and no one is cheating. They have various duties which take place before, during and after the test.

Prior to the exam, proctors prepare the examination room and test materials before examinees arrive. They ensure that the testing environment is suitable, which includes proper spacing of seats, designating areas for bags or coats and setting the right room temperature.

Proctors must be aware of the materials or equipment test takers may use during the testing period. For example, some examinations might permit the use of calculators, while others might not allow electronic devices.

Test proctors also must familiarize themselves with the rules and regulations of the exam to enforce them effectively. This includes knowing the time allotted for completing the test.

Before handing out test papers, proctors verify that the right examinees are present in the room by checking their identification. Sometimes they write the name or course code in a highly visible area so examinees can make sure they're in the right place.

After giving out test papers and other materials, proctors typically read all instructions to inform the examinees about guidelines and the consequences of breaking them. The key duty of proctors is to maintain the academic integrity of the test, so they make certain no one cheats.

If an examinee needs clarification about a test, proctors address this concern without giving away any part of the answer. Additionally, proctors eliminate distractions to ensure the testing environment allows examinees to concentrate. During the exam, proctors also indicate the time remaining so examinees can allocate their time wisely.

When the examination time expires, proctors must make sure that all the examinees stop writing or exit the test if it's computerized. Before they collect the tests or before the examinees leave the testing area, proctors make sure that the examinees include all necessary information, such as their names, on the test.

After collecting the exams, proctors typically dismisses the examinees and organizes the test papers. They must safeguard the test papers until properly delivered. In most cases, proctors must complete administrative forms for the test that they supervise.
