A basic upholstered piece is
composed of a frame, springs, foam, decking, cushioning, padding, and cover.
FRAME - gives structural support and determines basic shape. The best frames are of
kiln-dried hardwoods. Corner blocks (glued and screwed into place), should be used to
support legs properly.
SPRINGS - most commonly used springs are coil springs and sinuous (sag-less) springs. The
bottoms of coil springs are usually clipped to the webbing base on which they sit. Springs
are compressed and tied to the frame and to each other. Springs are usually tied to: give
initial tension, hold them perpendicular for proper spring action, prevent shifting, keep
individual springs together to work as a unit so weight will be distributed evenly, and to
bridge open spaces around coils to provide support of filling materials.
DECK - The area above the springs (under the seat cushion), should be well padded with no
lumps or bumps.
CUSHIONS- The majority of cushions are made with polyurethane foam (high density) and are
normally capped or wrapped with Dacron or other soft material for added surface plushness.
Coil springs, down or synthetic down may be used instead of foam.
PADDING- There should be adequate padding on the frame, so that when you touch anywhere on
the piece you should not feel the frame.
