The useful life
of an upholstered piece can be increased if the consumer follows a few simple rules.
VACUUMING - Loose dirt and dust should be vacuumed and brushed away before it becomes
imbedded between the fibers, where it can ncrease abrasion and wear.
TURN CUSHIONS - Reversing or turning your loose cushions weekly will allow even
distribution of wear over a long period of time.
FABRIC PROTECTORS - A protective finish does not eliminate the necessity of properly
caring for fabrics.
Spills should be cleaned away quickly following manufacturer's care code instructions.
Furniture is designed for humans, not pets. Animal hair and dander is very abrasive and
can be damaging to upholstery fabric.
CLEANING CODES
Many furniture fabrics carry the furniture industry's cleanability code. This gives the
consumer information about the proper methods to clean specific fabrics.
CAUTION Never remove cushion cover for separate dry cleaning or washing, even though they
do have zippers. Do not use bleach or any tumble method cleaning service as this may
destroy the backing of the fabric or shrink or otherwise damage the upholstery fabric.
"W" - Spot clean only with water-based shampoo or foam upholstery cleaner.
Pretest for color loss and fabric compatibility. Do not overwet. Use professional cleaning
service for overall soiling.
"S" - Spot clean only with a water-free cleaning solvent. Pretest for color loss
and fabric compatability. Do not overwet. DO NOT USE WATER. Use professional cleaning
service for overall soiling.
"WS" - Spot clean with upholstery shampoo, foam from a mild detergent, or mild
dry cleaning solvent. Pretest for color loss and fabric compatability. Do not overwet. Use
professional cleaning service for overall soiling.
"X" - Clean only by vacuuming or light brushing with a non-metallic brush. DO
NOT USE WATER OR DRY CLEANING SOLVENTS. Consult a professional upholstery cleaner.
