History
The Corner House Christian Church was organized by Jesse Hall, who for more than
fifteen years, had been a member of the Baptist Church of Sharon, PA., and at whose home
the first meetings of the church were held. The first church, which numbered about
40 members, included the families of Silas Burnett, Walter Clark, James Price, Archibald
Price, A.K. Cramer and Jesse Hall. It was a few years later when, led by Walter
Scott and his forcible preaching, the church, excepting only about ten members, accepted
his teaching and became known as The Disciple Church.
Jesse Hall and John Applegate were appointed as the Overseers and served the church as
such for about twenty-five years, the latter becoming also, its pastor. They were
succeeded as overseers by Oliver Hart and Warren Burton, Orenous Hart and David Waldruff,
James Struble, H. Green and A.K. Cramer, Jr. Other ministers during the early
history of the church were : Revs. Scott, Bentley, Hayden, Henry, Hartzell, Bosworth,
Perky and Lanphear. Later ministers were W.T. Horner, Wm. S. Winfield, Willard
Goodrich, Matthias Christy, Harmon Reever, C.C. Smith and J.A. Thayer.
The home of Jesse Hall stood on a hill close to the present church and after a few
years he gave a building and the ground on which it stood to the church to be used for
meetings. A number of years ago a new building was erected on the present site but
before it could be dedicated it was destroyed by fire. It was about sixty years ago,
during the pastorate of Rev. C.C. Smith, that the present building was erected.
From a little band of forty members the church has increased until the present time it
numbers over 400 members.
